Hello All,
Before getting in to the weekly hate, a word on the glorious
victory that was September 7th, 2013.
I have been trying to figure out a fresh take on that game
since I got back. The reality is that there is no fresh take. Everyone has said
their bit, and it all pretty much comes back to the same point: that was the
type of win you can build a program around. It is no guarantee of success
moving forward, and it certainly can be undone if the team loses focus and
drops a game to Virginia or the “crappy, sneakily feisty ACC team of the week”.
However, for where this team is at, and where it was last year, and the crap
that this program and fanbase have had to deal with for 2 years, this win is unquantifiable.
And so with the win came great excitement and a feeling of
unity, for once, amongst a divided fan base.
Every year I go to a game. Every year, I find myself getting
in to near – physical altercations with FELLOW MIAMI FANS. Think about that for
a second.
This year, everyone was on the same page (save for the
fuckass behind us who insisted on sitting down for the entire game - - luckily
for him I have been hitting buns and thighs in the gym lately so his view wasn’t
as bad as it could have been). There is a genuine sense of pride in this team,
and not just a bunch of Northeasterners coming out because ZBT set up a sick
tailgate rave, bro. The city has embraced this team. There was actual atmosphere
in the stadium, to the point that the place shook and reverberated after a few
particularly large plays by the defense (the Tracy Howard pick; the Tyriq
McCord strip sack). It felt…dare I say…Orange Bowl-ish for an afternoon.
I am not pronouncing us “back”. I am not saying it was
perfect, or that there isn’t work to be done. I have no fresh take to offer.
Only what I just said. The momentum is ALL moving forward right now. We
witnessed something special on Saturday afternoon. And instead of trying to
define it, I am just excited as hell to watch it play out. For years we have
said “it’s coming, we just need some time”.
September 7th was the first time it has truly
felt like we are right.

Savannah State, huh?
Do you know how hard this team is to hate?
This team is really, truly pathetic. They have won 4 games
since the beginning of the 2010 season, playing in the historically weak D1-AA’s…err,
FCS’ (who gives a shit what they’re calling it?) MEAC. They lost 66-3 to Troy
this year. Last season, in a game shortened by 24 minutes due to lightning
strikes, they lost 55-0 to Florida State. They lost 84-0 to Oklahoma State last
year, and the thing is, no one even REALLY thought the Cowpokes were running up
the score.
For the season, Savannah State is averaging 0.8 yards per
carry. That is not a misprint. THEY LOST 77-9 TO GEORGIA FREAKIN’ SOUTHERN.
This team isn’t just bad. This team is LAUGHABLY bad. I am
no expert, but I am fairly certain that me and 10 buddies could put up 21 on
these guys.
Now, normally I would hate that they are blatantly
scheduling games just to get the million dollar paychecks that teams like Miami
and FSU pay teams like Savannah State in exchange for a guaranteed win..but the
fact that their AD is so public about what he is doing is actually kind of
refreshing.
I could mention the fact that the University had to settle for $240,000 with an ex-coach who filed federal discrimination charges claiming that SSU fired him because he is white, but really, who cares? He probably got fired because he sucks at coaching football. And even if he doesn't, is anyone really up in arms that a historically black college might just want a black football coach? Spare me your fake outrage.
The only thing that I can find that I really, truly hate
about this school is that they conferred a degree in criminal justice upon Shannon
Sharpe, one of the all time worst football personalities ever. And really,
aside from his speech impediment (if Shannon and Lou Holtz ever got together
for a game the world would explode), I really don’t even have that much to hate
about Shannon Sharpe. He called Dan Marino a loser one time, which really
pissed me off as a 13 year old Dolphins fan, but even then probably only
because deep down he was kind of right. Man, fuck Shannon Sharpe.
Anyway, I got nothin’. It’s never nice to pick on the kid in
the wheelchair, and Savannah State is so bad that the kid in the wheelchair
thinks it is mean to pick on them.
Thank you ahead of time for allowing us to get our backups
and freshmen some game time, Savannah State. You were a....well, you were something
.
